Amateur Corner

I am by no means a professional woodworker. I’ve been in IT for over 20 years but my passion for building – whether it’s computer programs or wood projects – remains the same. And my desire to try new things as well, which in any industry, will have it’s share of lessons. Here are a few lessons that I hope can teach aspiring amateur woodworkers like me.

Epoxy Q&A

Q: I mixed my epoxy resin and hardener according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Why is it still sticky after the setting time?

A: Sometimes if you even have the right measurements, if the epoxy or hardener are not warm enough, it will result in a sticky/tacky result. This is not a big deal in the summer when garage temperatures are high but in wintertime, best to store your epoxy resin and hardener in a warm, dry place.

DIY CNC Router

When you look at a CNC router you’ll probably instantly think it’s too difficult to make on your own. I did too until I started researching the parts and steps needed. This one here took me about a couple of weeks to assemble (after a LOT of research). The parts were around $300 (not including the router itself) and all available from Amazon or local hardware store (I’ll post links to the parts). The frame is entirely made of wood. Also – below is an AMAZING YouTube video that I found and followed and tried my best to replicate when building this CNC.
